Explanation of the Dua for Drinking Water
The dua for drinking water stems from the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). According to his practices, it is recommended to start drinking water by saying “بِسْمِ اللَّه” (Bismillah – In the name of Allah) and, after finishing, to say “الحمد لله” (Alhamdulillah – All praise is due to Allah). This practice reflects gratitude and mindfulness.
How to Drink Water
1. Sit While Drinking:
- Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised drinking water while sitting, as opposed to standing, to follow his example and for better digestion.
2. Drink in Sips:
- It is recommended to drink water in two or three sips, rather than in one gulp, which is akin to the manner of drinking practiced by the Prophet.
3. Avoid Breathing in the Vessel:
- Avoid breathing directly into the vessel or blowing into it, as it is considered unhygienic and contrary to the Prophet’s teachings.
Source of the Practice
This practice is derived from various hadiths found in collections like Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Mishkat al-Masabih, which document the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). For instance, the guidance on drinking water in a seated position and in sips is found in:
- Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 4/302
- Mishkat al-Masabih
These narrations emphasize the Prophet’s (PBUH) approach to modesty, health, and gratitude in daily life.
